Additional $319m Abacha loot in UK, France – US

Published

on

The United States says there is a separate $319m (N121bn) loot by the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, in the United Kingdom and France barely a week after helping to repatriate $311m (N118bn).

The US Embassy in Nigeria said in a statement on Wednesday that there is $167m in stolen assets in France while there is a separate $152m in the UK which is being challenged in court.

The statement read in part, “The funds returned last week are distinct and separate from an additional $167m in stolen assets also forfeited in the United Kingdom and France, as well as $152m still in active litigation in the United Kingdom.”

Bloomberg had reported that the repatriation of the $152m (now $155m due to interest) to Nigeria is being challenged by the UK and the US because of alleged plans by the Nigerian government to give $110m out of the money to Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu, a known associate of the late Abacha.

Nigeria is seeking the approval of a UK court to take ownership of the assets before returning 70 percent of the proceeds to Bagudu under the terms of a 2018 deal, according to Bloomberg.

Nigeria’s Attorney-General, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has, however, denied ever entering a deal with Bagudu but court papers say otherwise.

The UK government’s National Crime Agency is also “opposing the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s application,” according to a motion filed by Bagudu’s brother, Ibrahim, to the District Court for the District of Columbia in the US capital on March 30.

The US Department of Justice said in February that its Nigerian counterpart is hindering its efforts to recover the allegedly laundered money from the UK.

Bagudu was part of a network controlled by Abacha that “embezzled, misappropriated and extorted billions from the government of Nigeria,” according to the US Department of Justice.

While successive Nigerian governments have repatriated billions of dollars looted by Abacha, who died in office in 1998, the current regime of Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), said it is prevented from assisting America’s ongoing forfeiture efforts by an agreement between Bagudu and a previous government in 2003.

Abacha is estimated to have stolen as much as $5bn during his five-year rule.

That 2003 settlement, which was approved by a UK court, allowed Bagudu to return $163m to Nigeria “without admitting to wrongdoing,” according to US court filings.

Bagudu was elected a senator in 2009 and the governor of Kebbi State six years later.

Meanwhile, the US has said the $311m that was repatriated to Nigeria last week must be used by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority for three infrastructure projects in strategic economic zones across Nigeria, as authorised by the Nigerian government.

The recovered funds will help finance the construction of the Second Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, and the Abuja-Kano road, the US said.

The agreement includes mechanisms for monitoring the implementation of these projects as well as external oversight.

Mom from Hell: California woman allegedly hosted teen sex, drinking parties

Published

on

NewYorkGM- A California mother is accused of hosting alcohol-filled parties for her teenage son and his friends at her Silicon Valley home and other places and encouraging them to drink heavily and engage in sex acts with intoxicated girls, some of them non-consensual, prosecutors said.
Shannon Marie O’Connor, 47, was arrested Saturday in Ada County, Idaho, where she now lives. She is awaiting extradition to Santa Clara County, where she faces 39 criminal charges, including misdemeanor counts of sexual battery and child molestation and providing alcohol to minors, prosecutors said in a statement Tuesday. Phone numbers associated with the family were not working, and it wasn’t immediately known if O’Connor has an attorney who can speak on her behalf.
At one party at her Los Gatos home in December, O’Connor allegedly handed a condom to a boy and pushed him into a room with an intoxicated girl. Both were minors. The girl was able to get away and locked herself in the bathroom, Santa Clara County District Attorney investigator Christina Hanks detailed in court filings.
During a New Year’s Eve party at her home with about five 14-year-olds, O’Connor allegedly watched and laughed as a drunk teen sexually battered a young girl in bed, Hanks said. In another case, she allegedly brought a drunk teen into a bedroom at her home where he sexually assaulted an intoxicated 14-year-old girl. That girl told investigators that at another party she was so drunk she almost drowned in a hot tub, Hanks said.
“It took a lot of brave children to come forward and to untangle this deeply disturbing case,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a statement. “As a parent, I’m shocked. As the DA, I’m determined to hold those adults who endanger children fully accountable to the law and our community.”

Prosecutors allege O’Connor, also known as Shannon Bruga, bought beer, vodka, whiskey and other liquor and encouraged the teens, who were mostly 14 and 15, to drink to the point of unconsciousness. She also told them to keep the gatherings a secret and on several occasions helped teens sneak out of their homes in the middle of the night to attend them, according to court documents.

O’Connor hosted at least six parties between June 2020 and May 2021, including the largest, a Halloween gathering at her Los Gatos home last October attended by as many as 20 teens.

She also held parties in Lake Tahoe and at a cottage in Santa Cruz, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Los Gatos, where 12 teenagers celebrated her son’s 15th birthday. In videos of that party shared on Snapchat, a teen girl can be seen unable to stand up and slurring her words, Hanks said.

O’Connor also allegedly went to great lengths to hide the gatherings from her husband and bullied a teen she suspected of breaking her rule of not talking about the parties, court documents showed.

Several teens reported drinking so much they blacked out and vomited heavily, and some reported physical injuries, including a broken finger and a concussion after falling from O’Connor’s SUV. O’Connor had allowed a teen to drive the vehicle in the parking lot of Los Gatos High School while two other boys held on to the back of the SUV and one of them fell and hit his head in the pavement, court documents show.

In a separate case, prosecutors said O’Connor faces felony fraud charges for making more than $120,000 in unauthorized charges on a company card she was given as an administrative assistant for Aruba Networks, a wireless networking subsidiary of Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

Chisom Oz-lee’s birthday: celebrating an Icon, by Emma Ike Agu

Published

on

Today is the birthday of one of my best friends and my sister from another mother.

Many years ago, a remarkable lady came to my studio ( then located in Castle Hill, Bronx, New York) to book my organization to help her build a website. Her name is Chisom Ooz-lee, the President and Chief Executive of Best Icon Production. After completing all the necessary paperwork, she left with the promise to come back to approve the final work.

Chisom Ozlee is GIAMMA AWARDS

Best Icon production I later was told is a movie production company. The first time I saw her , I recalled she had a stethoscope around her neck. I later found out she is a nursing practitioner.

I wondered how a nursing practitioner would run a movie company. Then, one day she came to my studio again with some external hard drives containing images, movie trailers and synopsis of her movies. While watching some of the trailers, I saw her play a lead role in her first film,’ In the arms of a stranger,’ written by Chisom Oz-lee. But, hell no, when I was later informed she is the head supervising nurse in two major Hospitals in Manhattan, New York City, I asked where she finds the time to be a nurse practitioner and also such an outstanding actress, scriptwriter, producer, and director.

As my organization worked closely with her to finish her website, I learned more about her. She had her master’s degree in English Language and was a school teacher in Nigeria before relocating to the United States. Another movie of hers that I embedded in her site, ‘The Lost maiden,’ featured all-time greats like Ini Edo and Omotola Jalade Ekeinde. ‘Timeless Passion, which featured Ramsey Nouah, Desmond Elliot, Uche Jumbo, Chisom Ooz-Lee, was jointly produced by Emem Isong and Chisom Oz-lee.Her blockbuster movie called ‘Unguarded.’ In this movie, Ramsey Nouah, one of Africa’s finest, and Uche Jumbo earned my respect for masterfully interpreting their roles.

Lost Maiden, featuring Ini Edo and Omotola

So, after seeing all the works this young lady put together single-handily, I had no choice but to use my media power to get all and sundry to know her. That was how thousands of folks out there thought I was her publicist and promoter. It was also part of why I began writing to bring to the notice of Nigerians both home and abroad the activities of great Nigerians who are making us proud. That was how I started a weekly broadcast called-Agu Loud in USA. The vacuum created by lack of writers to bring out front the good works our talents are doing in the United States got me primarily into publishing and running an Entertainment outfit-Iktune NY.

I am not a trained entertainment writer; writing is time-consuming. Since nobody was willing to assist, I found myself spending countless hours documenting the activities of many African talents that live and do business in the United States. I was even nominated for an award as a journalist, which I politely declined.

It was odd because promoting and writing about Nigerian Entertainers living in the United States made many folks who never knew me in the past think I was a journalist. Sooner than I anticipated, it became clear that many folks began identifying me as Chisom’s manager and promoter. Thousands of people forgot what I do daily to earn a living. Some spineless jerks also started spreading the rumor she was my girlfriend.

Timeless Passion

I will not forget how I went to Houston, Texas, to receive multiple awards as the best African Music Producer of the Year/ best Web Site designer/and the Media Personality of the year. Unfortunately, Chisom, whose movie also got nominated for awards, was in Nigeria and unable to fly directly to Houston. I had flown to Houston, Texas, with one upcoming artiste, called Chisom Orji, and to my greatest surprise, the organizer called her ‘Chisom Oz-lee, Emma Agu’s beautiful wife’! I was so embarrassed. I had to talk to one of the officials to have the Mc to correct what he said.

I also recalled what happened at the African Music Festival in Edmonton, Canada. I was the main act for the festival and Chisom also had the opportunity to premiere one of her movies during the festival. In addition, we both received awards during the festival.

I left for Canada without Chisom Oz-lee. On the day she arrived, I was in a rehearsal when the organizers announced that ‘my girlfriend’ had just touched down at the airport and that the Limo had just picked her up. Then, the main organizer told me she would be staying in my Presidential suite. So I politely told her to book another suite for her. She apologized for thinking Chisom and my humble self was in a relationship.

My relationship with Chisom in the last 15 years demonstrates that true friendship devoid of bad feelings, unnecessary fantasies, and emotional attachment, outlast relationships built on lust and what each party gets from the other. Chisom Ooz- lee is like a sister to me. I have the highest respect for her because she has never looked at me lustfully. I equally adore her like my own sister, and she could attest any day that I have never treated her differently. I won’t say it’s all roses between us; we do quarrel a lot, and in most cases, she would say, ‘Emma let me remind you, am not your wife”.

So when she relocated to a high-brow area in Dallas, I had no clue she went back to school again to get her Ph.D. in nursing. For Chisom, I don’t know when she will stop aiming to touch the sky.

She is beautiful, highly educated, and above all, rich by every standard. She is Nollywood movies powerhouse in the United States. So, friends, help me raise your glasses in the air and toast to Chisom’s birthday on this 13th of October 2021, for she is such a good fellow.

June 15, 2020, the day I can never forget-Emma Ike Agu

As a Nigerian-American International award-winning songster, musicologist, and music producer, I choose to live a tranquil life. I am very private and also lead and keep a low-profile lifestyle. It is my choice, for I believe nothing in this universe is worth all the commotion and noise we witness regularly.
Life itself is a bitch; there are so many things that happen around us that overwhelm us. Things nobody can explain.
Everywhere you look, all you see is mayhem. Inside the United States, every minute you turn on your television to watch the news, all we see and hear is mass shootings. When one gets tired of the eternal trouble inside America and wants to go back to Nigeria, folks will tell you to remain where you are. You could become a potential target to Armed Robbers, kidnappers, or even unknown shooters.
On June 15, 2020, something happened to me that transformed my life. One of the significant lessons I learned that day is that one has to be careful with fragile individuals. Some people act instantly on their impulses and do things that will make your life a living hell. Also, another takeaway that will follow me all the days of my life is that I have to choose my friends wisely. A lot of folks you call your friends are not deserving. There are vampires.
June 15, 2020, was a day I saw myself in danger. I came this close to losing my life over nothing. As crazy as some streets in New York City are, I have never had any issues with anyone. I followed the law and obeyed all rules and regulations. June 15, 2020, almost erased my excellent records. Although I survived that day with minor bruises and cops swarming around me to help, the incident still lingers on my mind. It was a very terrible day that you don’t wish for anyone.

To all my fans, get ready for my new songs, which will soon hit the music scene. As I always do, you are the judge when the song hits you.
